It delivers accurate performance - with dramatically reduced distortion for incredibly realistic sound - thanks to its PolyPlas woofers and titanium-laminate tweeter. The dual 5" woofers give dialogue a clean, natural sound. The ultrahigh-frequency driver extends response out to 40kHz, making the ES25C perfect for today's high-definition recordings and broadcasts. Overall great June 23, 2010 H. Mohammadpour (Carlsbad, CA, USA) For such a big center speaker you'd expect a little better quality, not that it's not good, but from the size of the speaker you'd expect something to wow you. But I'm very happy with it.
JBL ES25CBK Center Speaker April 26, 2010 Craig D. Greitzer (Philadelphia PA) I bought this speaker as a replacement for a center speaker that I had blown out. I'm a big JBL fan from way back and always liked their sound. This speaker is performing pretty much as was advertised and as I expected. It seems to handle the additional power that my new surround sound receiver has that the old speaker could not.
This speaker does have a rear port and it would probably sound a little better if I didn't have it above my TV in a cabinet. The item description did mention this but in my case I didn't have a lot of placement choices. This is the only real negative in that the speaker is a bit on the heavy side at 22 lbs so it might be hard to place on top or bottom of any TV without a reinforced shelf.
All in all I am very pleased. There are speakers out there costing 2 and 3 times as much as this one but it would be hard for me to imagine them providing that much better sound. A great value here if you like the JBL sound.
Revitalized my sound system April 17, 2010 Paul Gifford (Maryland) I'd been unhappy with my previous center channel speaker, a small Harman Kardon. Voices were hard to hear, making movies and TV less enjoyable. I finally got tired of it...what's the point in having a big screen (with a Blu Ray DVD player) if you can't enjoy the sound as well?
After much research I settled on this speaker. I couldn't find any professional reviews so I just had to compare features with products that were reviews. I also considered consumer reviews here and elsewhere. It was a little more than I wanted to pay but I figured I could always return it if I was unhappy.
I'm happy to report I won't be returning this speaker...it's made such a huge difference in the quality of sound coming from my system it's like I bought a whole new sound system. I plugged it in, recalibrated the receiver (it has an auto-calibrate feature), and popped in Star Trek (the recent movie) in Blu Ray.
I was impressed...the dialog was crisp and clear even during the action scenes at the beginning of the movie. I've also been watching The Pacific on HBO, a WWII miniseries. I saw the first few episodes with the old speaker and it is much better with the new speaker. While the war rages on I can now hear the dialog too.
The speaker is larger than I thought it would be, or my previous speaker was smaller than most, but it's unobtrusive and even my wife got used to it quickly.
One thing that will give me away as a neophyte speaker shopper...all the pictures I've seen show the individual speakers that make up the speaker. I wasn't sure if it came like that or not. It doesn't...of course there's a cover for the speakers. I'll have to upload a picture to Amazon to show what it looks like.
I might not be a speaker expert but I know what sounds good and this speaker sounds great. Crisp and clear dialog, sound that blends perfectly with the other speakers. I realize the receiver plays a big part but I've noticed a big difference just by adding this speaker.
CENTER CHANNEL SPEAKERS ARE BETTER April 15, 2010 Steve Dine (USA) I own both the ES25 and the LC2 by JBL and both are excellent center channel speakers. However, there are subtle differences. The ES25 is better for surround sound home theater watching because the 5.25 inch speakers produce higher frequencies thus creating crisper and sharper dialog. The LC2 is better for listening to music because the 6 inch speakers produce better mid-range and thus a full and richer sound. However, there are times when the ES25 is better for music such as when the music includes trumpet and horn instrumentals. If you like The Tower of Power or the Miami Sound Machine then go with the ES25 and enjoy a crisp and sharp horn section. If you want to hear all the frequencies of the percussion section then the LC2 is your speaker. I have 3 of the ES25 and 2 of LC2. What's more, I've rounded out and completed the sound spectrum with 3 ES floor standing towers containing 6 and 8 inch complimentary speakers along with my 12 inch subwoofer. I didn't mess with the bookshelf speakers because they only had half the compliment of speakers and thus half the sound as do the center channels. All the speakers in these two series are 8 ohm speakers and therefore, if you can afford ALL CENTER CHANNEL SPEAKERS, I promise that you won't look back later asking yourself, why didn't I get ALL CENTER CHANNEL SPEAKERS. I added the LC2 to my ES series system because I wanted two wall mountable speakers which is positive in itself. I only wish that it were in my budget to get all L series high performance speakers but at twice the price, it was out of my price range. If it is in your budget then go with the LC1 rather then the ES25 because they both have dual 5.25 inch speakers. It's my theory that JBL's intention was for the well funded listener to combine the LC1 (5.25 inch) and the LC2 (6 inch) center channel speakers and complete the sound spectrum with a L series subwoofer and towers containing both 6 and 8 inch speakers. Sadly, the moderately priced ES series doesn't have a 6 inch center channel speaker that is similar to the LC2; it would have been nice if all of my speaker boxes matched. Then again, my two LC2 speakers look fairly similar to the ES speakers and it's not that big of a deal to me.
Quick summary: at twice the price, high performance L series is better then ES but both are great when you combine all the various speakers to complete the sound spectrum. The LC2 is a nice addition to the ES series because it is a wall mountable center channel unit that contains dual 6 inch speakers not found in the ES series. Go with ALL CENTER CHANNEL speakers and avoid the bookshelf speakers because both are 8 ohm speakers and your receiver won't notice the difference and you will obtain better sound from the dual 5.25 or 6 inch speakers.
JBL center channel April 15, 2010 J. A. Moscoso (Newbury Park, CA) I am very pleased to have gone ahead and purchased this center channel. I finally have a complete JBL theater speaker set, and it ROCKS!!! I have everything hooked up optical, and it sounds great! I actually have to turn it down sometimes on HD channels with 5.1 surround. Before, it was difficult to hear voices in movies and then the explosions and sound effects would be so loud! I finally have a great balanace of sound throughout. I would recommend this to anyone. JBL speakers are awesome and affordable high quality products. They make it easy to afford a kick ass theater experience! I am very happy.
