4 out of 5 stars Unbelievably great speakers.   December 20, 2009

A lot of people will disapprove of this review because I'm not reviewing these exact speakers but the higher-end Aperion speakers but please bear with me.

I'm placing my review here instead of individually reviewing the higher-end speakers because I want the review to reflect the system as a whole instead of separate speakers.

If you've come this far to read reviews about Aperion speakers, then I'm guessing that you've come for information so here it is.

After many years, we've upgraded our system to a Blu-Ray player, a large HDTV, a high-powered receiver; all relatively high-end. All HDMI. The one thing we didn't upgrade (for whatever reason) was our speakers. Somehow we thought the 10+ year old speakers would suffice. Perhaps it was when we walked into a local audio store after buying all the new equipment to buy a programmable remote and saw the astronomical, heart-stopping speaker prices we felt overwhelmed and discouraged.

Even with all the high quality equipment and using Blu-Ray disks, we found the sound sorely lacking. We started using subtitles when watching movies -- the dialog was muddy and we couldn't comprehend words. I canceled my Blu-Ray subscription and watched DVDs. The new top of the line Blu-Ray player sat there for a year unused.

For whatever reason, it dawned on me that maybe the speakers had to be replaced. Wow, after an entire year, what a revelation.

I bought a HK system from Amazon for about five hundred dollars. I was sorely disappointed with their performance (they were of lesser quality than my ancient speakers) and immediately returned them.

After spending a few days researching speakers, I came across Aperion and read the reviews of the speakers and of the company. Full money back guarantee (including shipping, both ways!) and figured what did I have to lose?

I called Aperion and on the first ring or two an actual human (on the West Coast) answered the phone. Not only that, the person was able to fully answer questions, not just forward me on to someone else.

I spoke to the people at Aperion at length and being a little squeamish I bought a low end Aperion system (far lower than the Aperion 4T Hybrid 5.1 theater system). The sound was better than what I had but after a few days, I wondered what would a better system sound like?

Interestingly, the guys at Aperion are very reluctant to up sell their products. I had to practically insist that I wanted to return my equipment and buy higher end speakers.

Here's what I bought so far:

(two) Intimus 6T Tower Speakers for front speakers
(two) Intimus 5B Bookshelf Speakers for rear speakers (I'm considering upgrading these for 5T towers)
(one) Intimus 6C Center Channel Speaker
(one) Bravus 8D - Dual 8" Powered Subwoofer

We were totally blown away by the quality and depth of sound. The immense sound (doesn't have to be at high volume) is incredible; better than any of the local movie theaters here even with DTS sound.

The consequences were immediate. We no longer needed to use sub-titles. We could hear so much more. We never realized that so much sound came out of the rear speakers. The conventional wisdom is that one doesn't need good rear speakers since not that much sound comes out from the rear speakers. On new movies that are mastered for sound, that's no longer true. An astonishing amount of sound comes out of the rears speakers filling the room and immensely increasing the sound immersion experience. The other consequence was that I went on a Blu-Ray shopping spree.

My one year old top of the line Blu-Ray player was now an antique and I replaced it with the latest model. I found about Blu-Ray dot com and learned which movies had the best quality sound and bought a number of my favorite movies. Amazon must be pleased. I renewed my Blu-Ray subscription. I make sure that whenever possible, get a movie with uncompressed sound or at the very least TrueHD. And this is very important: Make sure that you set the sound for uncompressed sound; that's NOT the default for any Blu-Ray film that I've come across. For example, we watched 'The Rock' and I forgot to set the sound to uncompressed. While I was watching the movie, I wasn't all that impressed with the sound quality -- it sounded relatively dull. After watching the movie, it dawned on me that I hadn't set the sound. I set the sound to uncompressed and re-watched a number of sections. The sound had dramatically improved.

The difference between uncompressed and compressed sound can only be appreciated on higher quality speakers.

Do you remember when you got your first VHS or DVD player and went on a non-stop movie watching frenzy? That's what we've done with all of our movies, Blu-Ray and even DVD all because of the incredible Aperion speaker sound quality.

Do I sound like a kid who's frothing at the mouth because I got a new toy? Yes I am. But please realize that I bought these speakers several months ago and I'm still wildly ecstatic.

I don't want to come across as a rabid materialist. I don't buy that much (the advantages of a very small house -- there's no room to put anything in it), my newest car is 5 years old, our smaller kitchen appliances are 20-30+ years old, but when I do buy something, I like it to be of high quality so that I don't have to replace it within a few years.

I now reluctantly go to the movie theaters because none of the theater have the sound quality that we have. The only times I go are for movies that won't be on Blu-Ray for many months or going out with others.

A word of caution: If you live in an apartment or very close to a neighbor, these speakers almost certainly will not be work out for you. If you have the volume set too low, you'll miss out on a substantial amount of sound quality. For example, there's absolutely no way you can play 'Black Hawk Down' with the volume set to so low and still enjoy the film. 'Immortal Beloved', forget about it.

We live in a development of separate homes that have a reasonable amount of distance in-between each house yet our neighbor remarked that we must have an incredible sound system since they can hear it in their house. Again, I want to point out that I don't crank up the volume and I keep the bass realistic. I'm not 16 years old and want to see how much plaster comes off the wall with the bass maxed out.

Regarding Aperion service. Without a doubt, they have the highest quality customer service that I've ever encountered in my life. Initially, I called them many, many times -- each time a human answered. I don't think I ever talked to a machine. They were never annoyed and provided great technical service. When I wasn't receiving the sound I expected from the sub-woofer, he walked me through the setting for music and movies which resulted in a huge sound improvement. When I had a question about my receiver, he asked me which model I had and he brought up the manual (they apparently have the manuals for all the receivers) found the instructions and gave me the directions I needed.

Why 4 stars instead of 5? Because I wasn't critiquing the actual speakers and it didn't seem appropriate to give a too high rating otherwise I'd definitely give 5 stars.

I only wish I knew about these speakers a year ago when I upgraded all my other components.
