Product Description
In a live performance, music takes many different paths to reach your ears and touch your emotions, including a blend of direct and reflected sound. Bose® 301® speakers feature Direct/Reflecting® speaker technology to recreate this combination of direct and reflecting sound, delivering music that sounds spacious and more like a live performance. Conventional speaker design focuses sound directly at the listener, somewhat like a flashlight beam. That means stereo effects are most prominent in one sweet spot, delivering unbalanced sound to the rest of the room. 301 speakers produce Stereo Everywhere® speaker performance, so you and your friends and family can sit where you like and enjoy balanced stereo sound from almost anywhere in the room. Our 301 bookshelf speakers provide outstanding sound while fitting beautifully into your living space. Their slender and graceful lines will match your décor and our accessories offer even more placement alternatives. And 301 speakers are a suitable choice when youre ready to experience Bose sound in your movies as well as your music. Connect these versatile speakers to your surround sound receiver and enjoy the benefits of Bose sound in almost everything you watch.

4 out of 5 stars Great pair of speakers...filled the "void" nicely   August 29, 2010
Anthony Hoppe (Tracy, CA United States)
I purchased these speakers to replace an aging set of Paradigm Titans. I absolutely LOVED the Titans and was horrified when the woofer surround started dry-rotting. I wasn't sure what I was going to do! I researched repairing the surround, but I was afraid I'd negatively affect the sound output of the speaker.

I made this purchase on a whim. I went to Crutchfield's website, clicked Home Theater & Audio --> Home Speakers --> Bookshelf Speakers, and sorted the results by Customer Ratings. Lo and behold, the 301's were the first result with 28 people giving them an average ~5 star rating. I would've ordered the set from them, but I decided that I should take advantage of my Amazon Prime trial. :-)

My parents bought a pair of Bose towers (bought new in the mid 90's...I don't remember the model) which sounded great. They were given an older set of Acoustimass speakers (two satellites & sub) made in the mid 80's, and for their age they sound pretty good. They also bought a Wave radio which, in my opinion, sounds awesome compared to it's size. With that said, I figured...why not?

I connected them to my Denon AVR-790 receiver (90 watts per channel), ran the Audyssey setup, and then sampled some music via my iPhone 4 (EQ turned off) with the receiver switched to "Pure Direct". The speakers perform exactly as expected. Poorly recorded music sounds like crap, but well recorded music sounds AWESOME! Do these speakers outperform the Titans? It's hard to say. However, these speakers do create a more "room filling" sound than the Titans did.

All in all, the speakers are great. I'm glad I purchased them and I look forward to many years of fine movie watching and "tuneage" :-D.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised after reading so many negatives   May 30, 2010

This is a review of the Bose 301 Series IV, purchased as a used pair and recently installed in our library as part of a backup system. The amplifier that drives them is a plain-vanilla Sherwood purchased new about 9 months ago from the Radio Shack.

These speakers may not be the absolute best in every category, but I find them very musical, and nowhere near as bad as some of the negative buzz would suggest. I listen, critically, to classical music but also to many other genres in a relaxed way.

I am most impressed by the warm and three dimensional quality of solo instruments. Winds and brass are very appealing and lifelike. I have reservations about the string sound, which can get a little wiry, but before coming to a more definitive judgement I will need to try different recordings, and to fine-tune my amp a bit more.

The sense of space created by these speakers is very fine.

There is a lot of bass pumped out in orchestral tuttis, but it's kind of a cheap thrill -- the actual definition is not so great and the overall sound gets muddy in loud passages. Remember, these are bookshelf speakers. Soft and medium passages reproduce beautifully, however.

I get the point that the Bose sound is, to a degree, "manufactured," like most California wines, but for ordinary human beings going about their lives this is a good product. A note to bottom-fishers: I have now bought two sets of Bose speakers (201 and 301) used, at very advantageous prices. They do hold up pretty well in my experience over the years, the 201's are about 30 years old and still going strong. So hold out for a good deal if price is important to you.

5 out of 5 stars Stop Bose Bashing! 301 Speakers are phenomenal!   October 3, 2009

A few years ago, my wonderful wife, (she truly is!) bought me a pair of BOSE 301 speakers in cherry from Crutchfield. Her hope was that I would stop using the very large Optimus Pro 4000 speakers I've had for years. First off, speakers and headphones, and in fact all electronics some would say, need to be broken in by many hours of use. I've been into high-end audio for 35 years now, so I've learned a thing or two.
The BOSE 301 speakers are the best they have ever made. Better than the 901s. They need to be positioned correctly so that the "Direct-Reflecting" drivers can do their thing.
In our case, I have them mounted on wall-mounted TV stands that have them adjacent to the large solid-wood TV cabinet. They are just over 8" from the wall, about
5" from the side of the cabinet and about 40" from the side walls. The front tweeters are aimed exactly at the center seat to watch the TV. (Note the cabinet, which almost reaches the ceiling is exactly centered on the wall.)
This is not the main stereo. The living room has the 250 WPC separates stereo and is NOT set up symmetrically like the family room is. So, the 301s just wouldn't do.
However, where they are, they sound FANTASTIC! LPs especially sound great. Today I played an old QUAD LP of the 1812 Overture and chose Dolby Pro Logic for it. It
blew me away! After that I played a surround SACD and was even more impressed. 301s rock!
All-in-all, the sound stage the 301s put out, even in stereo, is wide and deep. It extends well beyond the physical width of the speakers location. So, to truly enjoy YOUR 301s try my set up. I found two brand new conventional TV wall mount stands on eBay that seem tailor-made for the 301s.
In closing, they must be set up symmetrically so that the sound can truly bounce off the walls and ceiling. Then you sit front and center, crank it up and try NOT
to smile!

5 out of 5 stars Best speakers for the money.. Period   March 17, 2009

I Thought I was doing good with a set of Infinity speakers. I always liked Bose products from listening to them in the stores where they have sound rooms setup. I took a chance and bought a set of these and it was amazing. After plugging these in and putting on a cd, it was like you could almost see the music coming out of the speakers !! The highs were very crisp and you can hear every detail of the music that somehow gets lost in other speakers. I was so impressed that I immediately trashed my infinitys ( I actually gave them away )( I couldnt stand to listen to them anymore ). Buy a set of these and you will be telling the same story to someone else !! I dont think you have to be an audiophile to know what kind of sound you like hearing !!!
